Pakistan has established the Chief of Defence Forces post, appointing Field Marshal Asim Munir to lead the Army, Navy, and Air Force under a unified command. The constitutional amendment aims to strengthen national defence coordination and give the CDF authority over the National Strategic Command, enhancing Pakistan’s strategic and nuclear oversight.
ISLAMABAD — November 10, 2025:
In a landmark development, Pakistan has passed a constitutional amendment establishing the new position of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) a move designed to enhance inter services coordination and strengthen national defence command.
The amendment appoints Field Marshal Asim Munir, currently serving as Chief of Army Staff (COAS), as the country’s first ever Chief of Defence Forces, placing him in charge of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
A Unified Command for National Defence
According to the official statement released by the Ministry of Defence, the creation of the CDF post is intended to streamline Pakistan’s defence structure, enabling better coordination, intelligence sharing, and strategic preparedness across all branches of the armed forces.
“The reorganization reflects Pakistan’s evolving security needs and ensures a unified defence policy under one command,” the statement noted.
Expanded Authority and Strategic Role
Under the new framework, the Chief of Defence Forces will oversee all joint military operations, defence planning, and inter service training.
Importantly, Field Marshal Munir will also chair the National Strategic Command, which supervises Pakistan’s nuclear assets and strategic deterrence policy consolidating the country’s defence leadership at the highest level.
The amendment also empowers the President of Pakistan to appoint the Army Chief and the CDF separately, ensuring institutional balance and clarity in roles.
National Significance and Institutional Stability
Defence analysts describe this development as a “structural evolution” that aligns Pakistan’s defence model with global military frameworks, where unified commands manage joint strategic capabilities.
The move is also viewed as part of ongoing efforts to modernize defence coordination amid regional security shifts.
Symbol of Continuity and Confidence
Field Marshal Asim Munir, a career intelligence and combat officer, has led key reforms in Pakistan’s counterterrorism and intelligence coordination systems. His appointment as Chief of Defence Forces reinforces continuity and confidence in military professionalism and national stability.
The government emphasized that the new command structure does not alter civilian oversight but enhances strategic coherence across services under constitutional authority.
A Step Toward Modernized Defence Architecture
This amendment marks a major milestone in Pakistan’s defence evolution transitioning toward a modern, integrated, and efficient command system aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty and responding to contemporary challenges with agility and coordination.
